Free-Range Eggs

What Are Free-Range Eggs?

At Nature’s Yoke, we believe that free-range eggs should come from hens who have the space and freedom to live their best life! For a hen, this mean a field of grass to peck, scratch, and look for bugs. It means a nice warm barn for shelter as well as nesting boxes for laying eggs!

We believe these things matter. Consequently, the type of eggs you buy matters too.

Unfortunately, with so many egg-options at the grocery store, there are a lot of questions about what free-range means and which eggs are best.

We’re here to clear up that confusion and answer some common questions regarding free-range eggs!

What Does Free-Range Mean?

Free-Range Natures Yoke Farm Chickens

This is a good question. Free-range is a term that must be defined. Depending on the farm, egg, or egg brand, you may find a different definition of what free-range means.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, free-range defines hens that have access to the outdoors for part of the day. Whether they choose to go out or not is up to the hen. Generally, however, there are no requirements for the quantity of time spent outdoors or the quality of the outdoor living space.

If you feel like this definition is a bit underwhelming, you aren’t alone.

At Nature’s Yoke, we want our hens to have guaranteed time and space outdoors to roam free and be themselves. We also want to make sure the outdoor space they have is covered in healthy vegetation with lots of green grass, worms, and other insects!

Certified Humane Farms

At Nature’s Yoke, all of our eggs come from Certified Humane free-range farms. This means we partner only with family farms that have earned the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) Certified Humane designation.

Certified Humane requires at least two square feet of outdoor space per hen. The outdoor space must be covered in vegetation, and the hens must be able to go outdoors (if they choose to) for at least 6 hours per day. Additionally, Certified Humane requires comfy indoor spaces with elevated perches and roomy nesting boxes.

Because we care so much about the kind and ethical treatment of animals, our free-range hens have pasture-like outdoor spaces where they can enjoy the sun, as well as nibble on a variety of plants and insects. Their indoor spaces meet all Certified Humane’s standards too.

This natural environment is designed to give Certified Humane free-range eggs a better nutritional profile. In fact, we test our eggs to check in on their nutrient density. So when you eat one of our eggs, you know it’s good for you!

Are Free-Range Eggs Better?

Free-Range Egg Cartons

At Nature’s Yoke, we like to say, happy hens mean better tasting eggs.

It’s true! Our Certified Humane free-range eggs taste better than other eggs! And the hens laying those eggs are happier too!

Because our hens spend time outdoors, they get to eat a variety of plants and insects, along with their well-balanced feed. It’s this total diet that gives our free-range eggs a better taste, nutritional profile, and makes them more nourishing than conventional eggs.

Conventional or cage-free eggs come from hens who never go outside. They don’t get all the sunshine, and time to scratch in the dirt, nibbling on grass and insects that our hens do.

So, if you care about the life of the hen, and want better tasting eggs that fill you with natural nutrition, then Nature’s Yoke eggs are the best ones for you.

Why do free range eggs matter?
